Newsletter

December 2009

Please accept my apologies for this slightly belated newsletter. As the festive season gets into full swing, may I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support in the past year and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. 2010 SubscriptionsIt’s that time of the year again! Subscriptions fall due on the 1st January 2010. As previously intimated, the cost has been increased to £15 for a single member and £20 for Household membership Junior membership for children aged under 16 is free of charge. You will find enclosed a Renewal Slip for you to return to the Treasurer with your subscription. This has proved very helpful in allowing Association records to be kept up to date. Beginners’ ClassesThese classes will start on Tuesday 19th January 2010 at 7.30 – 9pm in Aberdeen Grammar School. Please note the change of venue which is due to us outgrowing our previous room at Harlaw Academy. These classes will run for seven weeks and are free of charge. They are again being taught by Willie Taylor who will inject his usual brand of information and enthusiasm. The classes are also suitable for established beekeepers interested in undertaking the Basic Beemaster exam and for anyone feeling in need of a ‘refresher’. There is no need to enrol for the classes – just turn up on the night and you will be very welcome.‘Winter Roadshows’Many thanks to those members who turned out to support these meetings in Banchory and Laurencekirk. While preparing for the probable spread of AFB and EFB is not a happy focus for a meeting, it is absolutely vital that we prepare ourselves for this likelihood. To this end, we are indebted to Willie Taylor for hosting these meetings. The next ‘Roadshow’ will take place in The Hopeville Social Club, 34 Harlaw Road, Inverurie on Wednesday 10th February at 7.30pm. Thanks are due to Fred Simpson for organising this venue.I am still confirming details of the final meeting – this information will appear in the January newsletter.ApivarA few months ago I issued details, provided by John Cooper, of a varroacide named Apivar which provides beekeepers with an alternative to Apistan and Bayverol. Apivar can only be obtained from a vet in Dumfries who has been licensed to sell it. In recent weeks, I have had a number of enquiries from members who have lost the original contact details for the vet. Here they are!Robert Thurlow BVetMed MRCVSBridge Veterinary Practice51 Glasgow StreetDumfries, DG2 9AGTelephone: 01387 259111Email: robert.thurlow@bridgevets.free-online.co.ukClick here for next page
